Our Guide to the 2018 Spring races

This is your complete guide to the 2018 Racing season. From the dates of each event, to the dress code, see each event in detail below!

Derby Day

Saturday, Nov 3, 2018

Known for its fusion of monochromatic fashion, this day is as elegant as they come. The fashion stakes are high, with competitions for both men and women. Ladies embrace head to toe black or white, while men typically wear a grey suit.

Pairing:

A black pump is one of the most versatile pieces a woman can own. For a unique, statement take on the classic shoe, complete an all-black ensemble with the Italian Leather Sofia Stiletto Pump in Black.

Melbourne Cup

Always held on the first Tuesday in November, in 2018, Melbourne Cup Day will fall on November 6th.

Melbourne Cup is the race that ‘stops a nation.’ Unsurprisingly, it is known as the biggest day of the Spring Racing Carnival season and is one of the most prestigious events in horse racing history. Unlike Derby day, there are no colour rules for this event. That said, you are expected to look appropriate, forget the strapless mini dress and choose something knee-length or longer. Although you want to look classy, don’t be afraid to put your best (fashionable) foot forward. This is the day to experiment with eye catching colours or bold cuts, and don’t forget your headpiece! The overall look is important, but that doesn’t mean matchy-matchy. Have some fun!

Pairing:

With the colour and pizazz of Melbourne Cup, Compliment your outfit with a pop of colour, or wear a classic piece and let the outfit do the talking.

For a shoe to get on you on the best dressed list, go for gold with the Emma Metallic Leather Sandal in Gold.

Oaks Day

8th Nov 2018

Oaks Day is traditionally themed around feminine style, though men can get in on the action too! Now is the time to bust out the pretty floral dress, pinks or pastels and play around with the silhouette, theme or colours to showcase your own sense of style. However, put away anything that could be considered gaudy or inappropriate- make it memorable for the right reasons!

Pairing:

Pretty and feminine, you can’t go past the Grete Lace Pump in Beige. The perfect heel height for all day wear, these heels are made in Italy from smooth beige Nappa leather. This pair features cutout sides to frame your foot and has an elegant point-toe silhouette.

Stakes Day

Nov 10, 2018

Stakes Day is the last day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival. This event gives kids the opportunity to strut their stuff at Stakes Day Fashions on the Field. Full of fun, expect a upbeat atmosphere that is also family friendly. It is the most informal of the four main races, but that doesn’t mean casual. Go for low-key headwear and let the dress speak for itself.

Paring:

After a big family event, consider packing a comfortable shoe that can fit in a clutch. There are a range of flats in almost every colour to suit your outfit. The Ballettonet team LOVE the Kerrie Hess Cafe Crème for a neutral look to elongate legs or add a pop of colour- your choice!
